NYE didn’t quite go as planned.
I had been looking forward to visiting this jazz bar since the day I arrived in Vietnam from India. I made a reservation in advance, clearly mentioned that I would be coming alone, and was asked to arrive at 8:30 pm sharp. I arrived at 8:20.
When I got there, there was surprise that I was “just one person,” and I was directed to a small corner table near the entrance that seemed to be set up on the spot. I politely explained that I had a reservation and would prefer a proper seat. I was told that others had arrived earlier or booked earlier, even though the place was mostly empty and I had arrived before the requested time.
Eventually I was seated in the third row, not the front but acceptable, and I decided to let it go and enjoy the music.
Unfortunately, a few small things kept adding up. I was asked to pay every time I ordered a drink. When I politely asked whether this was the norm, since most places allow you to settle the bill at the end, the response felt dismissive rather than explanatory.
Later, a couple arrived well into the set and seated themselves at the only front seat marked “RESERVED,” even pulling over a plastic stool to sit together. No staff intervened. It was hard not to notice the contrast, given that I had arrived early and followed every instruction.
When I calmly pointed this out, the response felt curt and unwelcoming, and I decided it was best to leave rather than let the evening sour further.
I want to be clear. I am not calling this racism. But there was a sense of unequal treatment, whether because I was alone, a non Western guest, or simply seen as less important. Jazz spaces are usually warm, generous, and inclusive. This experience sadly was not.
I am sharing this so others can decide for themselves. The music deserved better hospitality.
PS. My review did not stay up on Facebook.
